    Just as with us humans, there are various shampoos available for dogs and cats, each with different effects and care properties. A dog groomer usually opts for a dog shampoo that helps the animal with coat or skin problems and promises the best possible grooming results.     Cat & Dog Shampoo – How to clean your pet’s coat gently and pH-neutrally

    A high-quality dog or cat shampoo is pH-neutral and specially designed for the care of dogs’ and cats’ coats and skin. For dogs and cats, the neutral pH value is around 6–8.8, which is more alkaline than the more acidic 5.5 found in humans. Because of this difference, human shampoos are not suitable for our furry friends. Their skin is also thinner and absorbs skin and hair care products more intensely.

    Dogs should only be bathed as often as is absolutely necessary. However, if your dog has rolled about in the mud, it will need a thorough clean. Healthy cats groom their own coats and do not normally need a bath. It may, however, be necessary for certain breeds or if the animal is ill and unable to groom itself.

    Tips for bathing dogs and cats

    There are a few things you can do to make bath time as pleasant as possible for your pet. Here are a few tips on how to go about it:

    • Dogs and cats that shed heavily should be thoroughly brushed before bath time. This prevents dirt and dead hair from sticking to the bath later on.
    • Keep the window closed to avoid draughts.
    • Make sure you have towels and shampoo to hand.
    • If your pet is lively, remove any objects beforehand that they could reach and destroy from inside the bath (e.g. shower curtain or decorations).
    • Bear in mind that some shampoos are concentrates and need to be diluted with water.
    • Keep the surroundings calm and free from distractions. For many pets, a bath is a very stressful experience. Stay relaxed and friendly to reassure your pet.
    • Use a fairly small amount of lukewarm water to bathe your dog or cat.
    • A non-slip mat or an old towel will help your pet stand safely in the bath.
    • Apply the dog shampoo or cat shampoo using a grooming glove in circular motions. Take care to ensure the lather does not come into contact with their eyes or ears.
    • Rinse the shampoo out thoroughly, as any residue can irritate the skin. For long-haired pets, a conditioner is recommended to keep the coat supple and make combing easier.
    • Gently dry your dog or cat. A dog dryer will help when drying long-haired breeds.

    The less space the pet has in the bath, the less likely it is to slip out of the water jet’s reach or out of your grasp.
