A cat or dog comb is the perfect companion to various brushes
| Coat type | Recommended comb | Frequency of grooming |
|---|---|---|
| Fine | Closely spaced teeth | Daily |
| Dense | Wide-spaced tines | At least once a week |
| Curly | Wide-spaced, rotating tines | 2–3 times a week |
Combs for dogs and cats can have different tooth spacing, i.e. tines spaced at varying distances. The choice ultimately depends largely on your pet’s coat texture and grooming needs. Perhaps you want to comb through a poodle’s entire topcoat, or maybe you need to work through the fine hairs on a spitz’s ears. If the coat is fine, the tines can be closer together, whilst wider spacing is ideal for denser coats to loosen knots and tangles. Cat or dog combs with rotating teeth are excellent for detangling and removing mats. The longer the coat, the longer the comb’s teeth should be. This allows you to comb through even long strands effectively.
Before combing, you can also use a grooming spray to revitalise and condition the coat.
A flea comb has particularly fine teeth and is useful for checking the coat to prevent parasite infestations. The fine comb helps you to find parasites such as fleas and their eggs and remove them effectively from your dog’s or cat’s coat.
